AyaBabas African Drumming & Spoken Word Ensemble

AyaBabas is a dynamic African drumming and spoken word ensemble based in Frederick, Maryland, dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich cultural traditions of the African diaspora through rhythm, poetry, song, and storytelling. In association with Aya Cultural Arts Studio and under the mentorship of renowned cultural artist Baba Michael Friend of Soul in Motion Players, AyaBabas delivers powerful performances that inspire connection, healing, education, and community engagement.

Our ensemble combines traditional West African drumming, call-and-response songs, spoken word poetry, movement, and a diverse collection of percussion and world instruments to create immersive cultural experiences for audiences of all ages. Through authentic rhythms, meaningful storytelling, and interactive performances, we celebrate African heritage while fostering unity, cultural awareness, and a deeper connection to our ancestral roots.

AyaBabas performs throughout Frederick County, Maryland, the DMV region, and beyond at festivals, schools, libraries, colleges, museums, corporate events, community celebrations, cultural programs, Black History Month events, Juneteenth celebrations, and private gatherings. Each performance is designed to engage audiences, build community, and share messages of resilience, perseverance, cultural pride, and connection to the Motherland.

The name "AyaBabas" reflects the Adinkra symbol Aya, representing endurance, resourcefulness, and growth, combined with "Babas," honoring fathers, elders, mentors, and the wisdom of ancestral traditions. Together, we embody the spirit of cultural preservation, intergenerational learning, and artistic excellence.
